MIA - Unaccompanied Minor Coordinator (Summer 2021)

MIA -  Unaccompanied Minor Coordinator (Summer 2021) at Rustic Pathways

The Company

Rustic Pathways is a student travel organization that offers the world's finest experiential education, community service, foreign language, and adventure programs. Our destinations stretch from the white-sand beaches of Fiji to the rainforest canopies of Costa Rica to Australia's Great Barrier Reef, and many places in between. We provide superior quality travel and community service in some of the world's most welcoming countries for students. Rustic Pathways demands professionalism and integrity across all of our operations, insists on quality in all aspects of our programs, and places a strong emphasis on the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We empower students through innovative and responsible travel experiences to positively impact lives and communities around the world.

The Position

Unaccompanied Minor (UM) Coordinators work directly with our students 14 and younger who are flying alone on their domestic flights to and from one of our gateway airports – Miami International Airport (MIA).  They receive special permission from the airline to go behind security to pick up UM students at their arrival gate and deliver them to the international airline check in desk.  Upon the students’ return to the U.S., the UM Coordinator meets them at the international arrivals area and gets them checked in with their airline for their domestic flight home.  The UM Coordinator does beyond security with the student and sits with him/her at the gate until the flight boards.

This person eases the airport hustle and bustle as the unaccompanied minor students begin and end their Rustic Pathways programs. UM Coordinators must be able to coordinate, track, and account for every unaccompanied minor student in the airport. They must also keep track of flight information for the domestic and international flights our students travel on. UM Coordinators are usually the first people our younger students meet at the airport. They impact our families by calming fears, explaining processes, getting students excited for the amazing opportunity ahead of them, and guiding everyone involved as students depart for their program and return to the US.

This is a seasonal, non-exempt position that DOES NOT travel. This position starts June 15 and will end August 11 of 2021. Schedule will vary depending on departure and arrival days.

You will work with other UM Coordinators,  Airport Coordinator(s), and Flight Leader(s) at your assigned airport to accomplish the following:

  • Protect the safety of students and abide by Rustic Pathways’ zero tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior.
  • Monitor student domestic flights for early arrivals, delays or cancellations.
  • Complete UM paperwork with the airline and acquire a gate pass (if possible.)
  • Escort unaccompanied minor students through the airport from arrivals gates to the international airline check in desk.
  • Escort unaccompanied minor students through the airport from the international return area to their domestic airline check in desk and through security to their gate.
  • Wait at the gate with the student until his/her domestic flight departs on return days.  (This may require staying later than expected if flights are delayed.)
  • Provide clear instructions and directions to our students about airport procedures including check-in, security checks, and departure and arrival gates.
  • Account for every unaccompanied minor student on the group flight that is departing and arriving that day.
  • Follow and implement all safety procedures and policies during interactions with students and potentially their parents.
  • Keep the other UM Coordinators, Airport Coordinators, Flight Leaders and Rustic Pathways office staff updated on student well-being and flight information.
